The FB group of Circumpolar Agriculture Association is meant to all who are interested in agriculture and food production in the circumpolar North. This means not just conventional agriculture but also nature-based livelihoods and products in their different forms. The scope of this group is wide and multidisciplinary.

You are welcome to share your news about related themes, projects, research results, invitations to conferences and meetings, your experiences and so on.

The group is established to act as a link of people involved in northern agriculture such as researchers, practitioners, educators, administrators, managers, policy-makers and students.

The 10th CAC successfully held

The 10th Circumpolar Agriculture Conference was successfully held 13-15 March, 2019 in Rovaniemi, Finland. Totally 170 international delegates including researchers, practitioners, managers, educators and students from 12  different countries and all over the Arctic participated in the event. The conference received many thanks for its arrangements and inspiring atmosphere.

The conference discussed topical challenges and opportunities of  local agriculture, food production and rural development in the northern areas. Arctic foods, their local profitability and business opportunities were also addressed, similarly as implications of climate change and land use, food security and other questions. The two-day conference included nine oral sessions, two poster sessions and a finalizing panel discussion.  

Third conference day was dedicated to an excursion to North East Finland for familiarization with local agriculture, reindeer herding and utilization of natural products.

The local organiser of the conference was the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland in cooperation with Natural Resources Institute Finland and several local institutions in Lapland. The conference was one of the events organised during the Finnish Chairmanship of the Arctic Council.

Call of Abstracts extended

The call of abstracts for the 10th Circumpolar Agriculture Conference has been extended! The new deadline is 29th October, 2018. The link for submission of abstracts is in the conference website.

Please note that conference presenters have the possibility to publish in the Open Agriculture, in Special Issue of the Conference.

The deadline for submissions of full-length papers is 31st March 2019.

Please note that the Call for Abstracts for 10th Circumpolar Agriculture Conference is on! The Call of Abstracts will end 17 September.

The Conference will take place 13-15 March 2019, in Rovaniemi, Finland. It will address best practices, innovations and perspectives of local small-scale agriculture in the North.

The program also includes Arctic Deli Market and an interesting whole-day excursion in North-East Lapland.

New thinking about local agriculture in the circumpolar Arctic – Best practices, innovations and perspectives

The conference is the tenth in line of international conferences organized within the framework of CAA (Circumpolar Agriculture Association), aimed at people involved in northern agriculture such as researchers, practitioners, administrators, managers, policy-makers and students. The conference will address a bottom-up approach and new thinking of local agriculture, food production and rural development in the northern areas.

The goal is to open up and discuss versatile meanings of circumpolar agriculture and call for new thinking to address its topical challenges and opportunities. The sessions will highlight among others best practices and resilient solutions in the utilization of animal and plant resources, local breeds, reindeer herding, small-scale farming and non-timber forest products. The conference will address the high quality of arctic foods, their local profitability and business opportunities. The importance of food security and sustainability in different regions and countries will also be discussed.

The conference is hosted by the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland together with the Natural Resources Institute Finland; other coorganisers are ProAgria Lapland, Lapland University of Applied Sciences, Regional Council of Lapland and Reindeer Herders’ Association.
