One of the ideas behind the foundation of the Circumpolar Agricultural Association in 1992 (which is a non-governmental organization concerned with northern agricultural science, practices and policies) was the wish to arrange the Circumpolar Agricultural Conference every third year or so within its sphere of interest, and thus bring people together for knowledge sharing and contact building, who share a common interest in the livelihood in the remote areas of the High North. The Circumpolar Agricultural Conference has hitherto managed to bring together people from both academia and research, governmental and local administration and governance, practitioners in both agriculture, food production and many other professions, NGO’s as well as representatives from local communities within the Arctic region. This same goal is also set as the aimpoint for the 11th Circumpolar Agricultural Conference this year.

Further details for the conference programme, as well as for the abstracts etc., are at hand on the CAA homepage https://circumpolaragriculture.com/ as well as the CAA’s Facebook site https://www.facebook.com/groups/2069668989966001/.

11th Circumpolar Agricultural Conference: Call for Abstracts

Regarding The 11th  Circumpolar Agriculture Conference to be arranged in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, September 5th to 7th 2023  –  #CAC2023:

The 11th Circumpolar Agriculture Conference (#CAC2023) will be held under this headline: “Farming in the High North – Contributions to a sustainable local Bioeconomy and secure Food Systems.

The reason for this rather wide theme for the 11th Circumpolar Agricultural Conference (CAC2023), but yet of so topical interest, has its foundation in e.g. the Nordic perspectives on the future, as described in the Vision 2030 Programme [a most sustainable and integrated region; i.e. green, competitive and socially sustainable], as well in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). No other sector, like Agriculture in its broadest sense, might interact with as many of these prioritised topics. The present geopolitical turmoil and the aftermaths of the pandemic have only underlined calls regarding the vulnerability of our modern supply chains, and on the need for e.g. rethinking the schemes for local food production. Prosperity for the citizens of the Arctic is a cornerstone for making the region attractive to the younger generations and thus being vibrant communities. The predicted effects of climate change will probably over time reveal huge areas of both land and sea in the Arctic, where the citizens of the region might have their option to contribute to the FAO call on increased future global food production.

Please note that, the call for abstracts regarding presentations (oral og in writings), posters or other relevant material for the 11th CAC 2023 is now open.

Abstracts can be max. 250 words long and must be written in English and include text only (no pictures, graphics or references). Keywords can be included.  Please submit your abstract by e-mail to Búnaðarstovan – Agricultural Agency, at the distinct conference e-mail address: Circumpolar Agricultural Conference 2023 CAC2023@bst.fo Deadline for abstracts will be August 1st.

Further details for the #CAC2023 will be available in a few weeks from now regarding programme details, accommodation, registration, fee etc. For more information, please remember to visit the CAA homepage as well as the CAA’s Facebook site.

We are glad to announce that, we now have acceptance from several distinguished people who will undertake the challenge of being invited speaker on subjects relevant to the important headline for the conference; thus contributing to make this conference a memorable event.

11th Circumpolar Agricultural Conference to be arranged in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, September 5th to 7th 2023

It was decided at the 10th Circumpolar Agricultural Conference held in Rovaniemi in Finland back in 2019 that, the upcoming 11th Circumpolar Agricultural Conference would be arranged in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, in 2022.

Unfortunately, this plan had to be postponed until further notice due to the geopolitical turmoil which arose last year.

It is therefore with great pleasure that we now can announce the resumption of the 11th Circumpolar Agricultural Conference!

The next triennial conference, the 11th Circumpolar Agricultural Conference, will be arranged by Búnaðarstovan – Agricultural Agency of the Faroe Islands – and will take place during the days of September 5th to 7th 2023 in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands.

The conference venue will be located at the renowned Nordic House in Tórshavn (Norðurlandahúsið í Føroyum www.nlh.fo).

The conference will embrace 2 days of indoor meetings and a 1 day field excursion. The conference language will be English.

The main theme for the 11th Circumpolar Agricultural Conference (#CAC2023) will be held under this headline:

Farming in the High North – Contributions to a sustainable local Bioeconomy and secure Food Systems.

  • Day #1 Arranged as a plenum session under the main theme.
  • Day #2: Arranged as until four parallel sessions selected from these respective headlines:
    • Arable plants for the High North; potentials within plant breeding and the gain from Crop Wild Relatives.
    • Future farming options in the High North as a consequence of the predicted land releases due to climate change
    • Contributions from farming and affiliated economic activities to more resilient local communities and stronger local economy in the High North
    • Digitization as a motorway for wider market access for the products and services deriving from resources in the High North
    • Gender equality and demographic distribution in the High North region, prospects, challenges and remedies.
  • Day # 3: A field excursion.

The predicted effects of climate change will probably over time reveal huge areas of both land and sea in the Arctic, where the citizens of the region might have their option to contribute to the FAO call on increased future global food production.

The theme is also meant to be a prolonged debate from the 10th. conference in 2019.

Further details for the CAC2023 will be available later this summer.

11th Circumpolar Agricultural Conference (CAC 2022) postponed until further notice.

Dear colleagues and friends of the Circumpolar Agricultural Association (CAA).

It is with great regret that we have to inform You, that the 11th. Circumpolar Agricultural Conference (CAC 2022), which was planned to be arranged in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, in July this year, unfortunately has been postponed until further notice; presumably and hopefully just until the summer of 2023.

The reason for postponing the 11th. Circumpolar Agricultural Conference (CAC 2022) is the turmoil following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the unanimous and firm boycotts of Russia. Due to the preliminary suspension of the external Nordic economic support, a successful conference would not have been a realistic option, since this contribution was of paramount importance to keep the conference fee at an affordable price level, as well as to make it possible for the hosts to invite speakers from outside.

Therefore, the board members of the Circumpolar Agricultural Association (CAA) have now decided to postpone the 11th. Circumpolar Agricultural Conference (CAC 2022) until further notice.

We might just hope to resume normal activities again within a not too far time span.

Best regards, Tróndur G. Leivsson, President of the board.
